Walter von Reichenau (1884–1942) was a German Field Marshal who served in the Second World War.Reichenau was born on October 8, 1884, in Karlsruhe, Germany, to a Prussian general. He joined the German Army at eighteen, in 1902. During World War I Reichenau fought on the Western Front and was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. By 1918 he had been promoted to the rank of Captain.During the Weimar Republic, Reichenau remained in the German army as a General Staff officer. From 1931 he was appointed Chief of Staff to the Inspector of Signals at the Reichswehr Ministry. In 1932, his uncle, Friedich von Reichenau, introduced him to Adolf Hitler and Walter von Reichenau joined the Nazi Party. In 1934, he persuaded Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler that the power of Ernst Röhm and the SA must be broken if the Army was to support the Nazi regime. This convinced Hitler to take measures which led to the Night of the Long Knives.In 1933, when Hitler came to power, Reichenau was appointed head of the Ministerial Office of the Reichswehr Ministry. At this post, Reichenau worked as chief liaison officer between the German Army and the Nazi Party. In 1935 von Reichenau was raised to lieutenant-general and was appointed Commander in Munich.In 1938, Walter von Reichenau was Hitler’s first choice to succeed Werner von Fritsch as Commander-in-Chief of the German Army, but older German Generals such as Gerd von Rundstedt and Ludwig Beck refused to serve under his Reichenau’s command, and Hitler had to back down.At the outbreak of the Second World War, in September 1, 1939, Reichenau commanded the 10th Army during the invasion of Poland. On the Western Front, he led the 6th Army during the Battle of France in May 1940. Then Hitler promoted him to Field Marshal that year.In 1941, during Operation Barbarossa, Reichenau, as commander the 6th Army, captured Kiev and Kharkov. He was an anti-Semite and supported the work of the SS Einsatzgruppen in exterminating the Jews in the occupied Soviet territories.In December 1941, Hitler relieved Walther von Brauchitsch as Commander-in-Chief of the German Army. Once again the Führer wanted to appoint von Reichenau to the post. But again the senior Army officers rejected von Reichenau as being "too political" and Hitler appointed himself instead as Commander-in-Chief.In January 1942, Walter von Reichenau suffered from a stoke, and it was decided to fly him to a hospital in Leipzig, Germany.
