your rifle is a Vetterli VItali mod. 1870/87.
It comes from a Vetterli mod 1870 converted to a repeater with the adoption of a Vitali magazine. The magazine had 4 cartridges.
This rifle was used by Italian Army till the adoption of the model 1891.
In some occasion it was used also later. For example during Adua Battle ,1896, Italian troops used it ( and someone says that is one of the reason of Italian defeat)
The caliber was the same of model 1870: 10,35 x 47.
With the wide adoption of model 1891 this rifle became old and was given to colonial Troops.
In 1916 these rifles were transformed again adopting the caliber and the magazine of the mod.1891.
This Model is named 1870/87/16.
A.O.I. means Italian oriental Africa ( Ethiopia and Somalia).and says that the rifle was given to colored troops.


Il tuo fucile è un modello 1870/87.
Deriva da un Vetterli 1870 trasformato a ripetizione con l'adozione di un caricatore Vitali dotato di 4 cartucce.
Questo fucile fu usato dall'esercito italiano fino all'adozione del modello 1891.
in alcune occasione venne usato anche più tardi.
Nella battaglia di Adua, 1896, armava le truppe italiane( e secondo alcuni fu una delle cause della sconfitta).
Il calibro era lo stesso del modello 1870: 10,35 x 47
Con il diffondersi del mod 1891 divenne obsoleto e fu destinato all'armamento delle truppe di colore.
Nel 1916 subì una nuova trasformazione adottando calibro e caricatore del modello 1891.
Questo modello è conossciuto come 1870/7/17
La scritta AOI significa Africa orientale Italiana (Etiopia e Somalia) e ci dice che venne dato in dotazione alle truppe di colore
