A German Wehrmacht soldier poses in the ruins during the Battle of Stalingrad with his captured Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun. Lasting five months, one week, and three days, the Battle of Stalingrad is often regarded as the single largest and bloodiest battle in the history of military warfare. The heavy losses inflicted on the Germans make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the entire war. It was a turning point in the European Theater of the war as the German forces never regained the initiative in the East and withdrawing vast military forces from the West to replace their losses. In all, the battle resulted in an estimated total of 1.7 to 2 million Axis and Soviet casualties. Stalingrad (now, Volgograd), Volgograd Oblast, Russia, Soviet Union. November 1942,
